Kerith is a triple-threat: winemaker, former medical doctor, and mom to three kids.  Her final baby, Bruliam Wines, honors her first three: 'Bruno, Lily and Amelia.'  Of course, the 'Bruliam' name and logo riff on the Periodic Table of Elements, with a sly wink to her former medical career. Although her deepest passion is for making wine, Kerith manages all of the day-to-day winery operations.   She also holds the following titles: Chief of Grower Relations, Head of Marketing, Director of Sales, and Go-to Tank Sanitizer.  She writes all of the copy for the website, labels, tasting notes and tech sheets.  So yeah, one could say that she basically holds every winery position herself, with the exception of spreadsheets.  The CF-NO (her Husband) handles Excel. The Dry Creek Valley is Zin country. Bruliam is able to source from their own Rockpile parcel known as 'the Swale' block. This zin is not pink. This zin is not 'hot' or 'jammy,' which are undeniably great assets to a heavy metal cover band. Bruliam's Rockpile Zinfandel is a revelation (cue gospel 'Amen,' sister). I'm not kidding.  You've got to try this stuff.  Even Kerith's mom says so. This is the first vintage with Bruliams new Rockpile partners at the Gloeckner-Turner ranch and they couldn't be more thrilled. From the first drops, the intensity of hue is hypnotic. Then, dark black and blue fruits, heady exotic spice, and cigar box waft from the glass. This Zin is hedonistic and plush, with a backbone of solid acid that keeps her lively and food friendly. This Zin is rich and comforting, like cashmere pajamas. Rockpile is in her DNA. She's gorgeous. The estate had been modernized for the last few decades until Gernot Kollman purchased the property in 2009. He's spent the last decade revitalizing the vineyards and adding soul back into the mix. I love these wines because they are a contradiction of ideas. While they are a literal new kid on the block in a region full of centuries old wineries, the property is one of the oldest in the country. 80% of the vines on the estate are ungrafted and more than 60 years old. They are labelled as 'trocken', or dry wines, but have this efficacious, perfectly integrated sweetness that lingers beneath and drives the finish. The Escheburg is the best introduction to the estate style, a blend of several estate vineyards creating absurdly delicious dry Riesling with a kiss of 'hidden sweetness'. The Ellergrub is quickly becoming one of the estate's 'cultiest' wines, with prices escalating year over year. This 1.4 hectare pure blue slate vineyard from the magnificent 2016 vintage. Artisan is the perfect word to desribe these Champagnes. Fourth generation Alexandre and Fanny Heucq artfully craft their wines with meticulous care, using biodynamic principles and very hands-on work in the vines at all times.  The winemaking profile will especially please those fans of Krug's immediate opulence due Heucq's practice of vinfying and maturing the wines in second use Meursault barrels, and having the wines age on the lees agrafé, meaning under a cork stopper instead of a crown cap, which is thought to produce more complexity. The 'Assemblage' bottling blends 40% Chardonnay with 30% each Meunier and Pinot Noir, with 30% ageing in second use Meursault barriques and 60 months of lees ageing. It's round and toasty with crunchy berry fruit and a refreshing linearity that comes with its Extra Brut dosage level. The Parcellaire Les Roches is a single vineyard e expression that takes the intensity and power up quite a few notches. This is composed of 100% Meunier vinfied entirely in second use Meursault barrique, which adds an opulence to the wine  that is balanced with 36 months on the lees and an extra low dosage. Both of these wines prove that Meunier can stand with the best of Champagne when in the right hands. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e100% Meunier aged on the lees for 36 months from the single Les Roches site. The estate had been modernized for the last few decades until Gernot Kollman purchased the property in 2009. He€™s spent the last decade revitalizing the vineyards and adding soul back into the mix. I love these wines because they are a contradiction of ideas. While they are a literal new kid on the block in a region full of centuries old wineries, the property is one of the oldest in the country. 80% of the vines on the estate are ungrafted and more than 60 years old. They are labelled as €˜trocken€™, or dry wines, but have this efficacious, perfectly integrated sweetness that lingers beneath and drives the finish. The Escheburg is the best introduction to the estate style, a blend of several estate vineyards creating absurdly delicious dry Riesling with a kiss of €˜hidden sweetness€™. The Ellergrub is quickly becoming one of the estate€™s €˜cultiest€™ wines, with prices escalating year over year. This 1.4 hectare pure blue slate vineyard from the magnificent 2016 vintage.
