Few things in life are more humbling than blind tasting a wine that you confidently call French, only to have it turn out to be Australian or a Kiwi. At the same time, this confusion represents the ever-increasing quality of wines from Oceana. Mills Reef is an excellent example of a New Zealand producer whose wine can be startlingly Old-World in style without the price tag of something from France. They specialize in Bordeaux varietals and Syrah, with the best examples coming from the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay. Delightfully Bordeaux-esque in style, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon shows an earthiness and restraint that is rarely associated with New World producers, balancing New World fruit with Old World poise. It shows notes of blackcurrant, mocha, and anise seed balanced by quality French oak usage. The Syrah is delightful as well - it is a 2013 vintage, all hand harvested (as is the Cabernet) and is aged in French oak, a small amount of which is new. It brims with intense flavors of boysenberry, black pepper, and cooked meats and is an awesome alternative to Northern Rhone Syrah for all my Cornas and Crozes Hermitage enthusiasts.

Houston Orders

After checking out, you will receive a pickup confirmation email when the order has been pulled and packed. You can pickup your wine at our shop at 2301 Portsmouth Street in Upper Kirby, Houston.

San Antonio Orders

Until the new shop opens in San Antonio, we can transfer or ship wine to San Antonio. At checkout, choose Pick Up in Houston, and email us and we will transfer or ship your wine to San Antonio free of charge.
