Emmanuel Lassaigne's father, Jacques, was one of the first to plant this land in the 1960s and the estate remains true to form as the yardstick by which all others are measured in Montgueux. Moreso, It has risen to the occasion as one of the truly cult favorites of the in-the-know Champagne crowd. While the intensity of the Languedoc sun can be a challenge to most vignerons, Mas de Daumas Gassac enjoys an exceptionally cooler climate, influenced by the breezes from the Cévennes Mountains to the north, which slow the ripening of the grapes and aid in the retention of natural acidity. This is perfect for balanced Cabernet Sauvignon in this warm region. The final 20% of this Cabernet blend is rounded out with a mix of unusually placed grape varieties the family has been perfecting in the region for the last 40 years: Nebbiolo, Malbec, Dolcetto and more. Those looking for truly interesting wines off France's more beaten paths will find tremendous reward in these wines. The estate had been modernized for the last few decades until Gernot Kollman purchased the property in 2009. He's spent the last decade revitalizing the vineyards and adding soul back into the mix. I love these wines because they are a contradiction of ideas. While they are a literal new kid on the block in a region full of centuries old wineries, the property is one of the oldest in the country. 80% of the vines on the estate are ungrafted and more than 60 years old. They are labelled as 'trocken', or dry wines, but have this efficacious, perfectly integrated sweetness that lingers beneath and drives the finish. The Escheburg is the best introduction to the estate style, a blend of several estate vineyards creating absurdly delicious dry Riesling with a kiss of 'hidden sweetness'. The Ellergrub is quickly becoming one of the estate's 'cultiest' wines, with prices escalating year over year. This 1.4 hectare pure blue slate vineyard from the magnificent 2016 vintage. Interestingly, these vineyards were originally planted with Mourvèdre and Colombard,  and then replanted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon early in the 20th century. These two bottlings will be of the first micro-climate wines to be released from the estate. Whatever they are doing is definitely working; Pontet Canet has garnered incredible acclaim in recent vintages, and now clearly sits with other elite Super-Second properties in Bordeaux. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe have two outstanding vintages on offer tonight, 2002 and 2015, each of which are perfect examples of Pontet-Canet's signature style. The 2015 vintage in Bordeaux is considered an excellent one, with a warm summer, but cooler and slightly more damp August which allowed for even fruit ripening and high quality and consistency of fruit at harvest.This is evident in this particular bottle of wine: It is rich and succulent with complexity, texture, and incredibly ageability, along with some oak usage to round out the wine and soften the tannins. A wine of power, the 2015 Pontet Canet brims with velvet fruit and minerality coating its muscular frame.  The 2002 is obviously the more mature and aged example, but it is still singing beautifully. Now we've eagerly grabbed up a case of their new red, Buri Bellaria. This is a coferment of 100 year old Merlot and Refosco vines sourced from land recently purchased from Friulian legend Miani. The blend is 90% Merlot and while the winery does not disclose exact winemaking stats, the oak is well-integrated allowing the bright red fruit character of both varieties to shine. The Merlot is herbal, floral and fresh, evoking the unadulterated Right-Bank character of Chateau Le Puy in it's best years. Refosco contributes a uniquely brawny tannin profile. The fresh red fruit notes might fool you, but for all of it's aromatic elegance there is plenty of structure to rival top Super Tuscan labels. At the price, this is the most true-to-its-roots and ageworthy Merlot we've seen out of Italy. Well, if you haven€™t heard of  Frédéric Cossard, this famous natural winemaker actually was a dairy engineer who made cheese prior to becoming a highly sought after Burgundian winemaker. His philosophy in cheese-making is similar to his winemaking philosophy - pure, well cared for ingredients that are processed using minimal intervention, therefore allowing the final product to be demonstrative of the quality of its parts. Unlike many of his peers, Frédéric was not born into a winemaking family - he had to start his winemaking journey from scratch, no mean feat in Burgundy! His estate, Domaine de Chassorney, was created in 1996 and started with a few hectares of vineyards in the villages of Saint Romain and Auxey-Duresses. It has grown since then, and now covers 10 hectares across several villages.  Frédéric€™s approach to winemaking is rooted in a more €œnatural€ approach: this involves organic viticulture, spontaneous fermentation, whole cluster, as well as an emphasis on concrete and Georgian quevri instead of new oak. Frédéric also makes wine as a negociant under his own Frederic Cossard label. These wines are equally as good as those made under his Chassorney label, as Cossard works hand in hand with each individual grower to ensure that the vines are managed to his exacting standards.
