Ribera del Duero's focus on mostly monovarietal Tempranillo from gnarly, goblet-trained vines that are nearly a century in age makes this region worth a deep dive. Additionally, the top producers' seamless marriage of traditional techniques (made famous by producers in Rioja like López de Heredia) and the lessons of 21st century winemaking science make this region a hotbed of world-class wines worthy and capable of decades of aging.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe producer who I feel is the most overlooked PERIOD is Viña Sastre. While their Pésus bottling goes for $500-600 and is one of the most adored in all of Spain for savvy insider collectors, the winery remains mostly overlooked in the United States. The Viña Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz is a bottling that is released only in top years in a volume of less than 500 six-pack cases for the world market. The vineyard was planted in 1946, and its ancient vines remain dry-farmed and bush-trained as is traditional. It's a deeply colored opaque style, matured in a combination of used Amerrican and French Oak barrels for five years, resulting in an exuberant and complex explosion of ripe black fruits, wine-soaked cedar and sandalwood, zesty five-spice powder, mocha, and scorched earth. The Regina Vides is even more special. with a 6,000 or less bottle production produced from goblet trained vines with an average age of over 100 years! This cuvée is sort of like the \"baby\" Pésus and sees 100% new French oak. It is intense, powerful, but somehow still incredibly elegant, just like its more famous Unico counterpart. - BRANDON KERNE, MASTER SOMMELIER\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cu\u003e91 Points from Joaqun Hidalgo of Vinous\u003c\/u\u003e\u003cspan\u003e: \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"The 2018 Flavus is a Jaén labeled as Vino Blanco de la Horra and was aged for ten months in mildly toasted barrels. Yellow with a greenish sheen in the glass. Delivers notes of hazelnut and herbs, along with pineapple and jasmine, against an oak and vanilla backdrop. The palate is dry and creamy with a slightly astringent mouthfeel due to the low 3.2 pH. At only 12% alcohol this evokes more of cool climate Syrah's savory leanings with Grenache-like juicy red \u0026amp; black fruit. 18 months in smaller oak barrels smooths out the gamey savory edges. The tannins are fine grained and there is an incredibly complex nose of cherry kirsch, blackberry, mace, clove, grilled meats and dried This team of four has scouted the rocky coastline of Tenerife in the Canary Islands and the precipitous, impossibly steep terraces of Ribeira Sacra for the most clandestine, old vine vineyards on the planet to bring these flavors into your glass. Hand-picked, foot-trodden, wild yeast and whole cluster fermented for wild, savage flavors of spice and sun-expressed coastal and mountainous herbs and flowers. The project has tremendous sway in the natural wine community. of Houston's classic restaurants for Spanish cuisine, and we picked off a gem: their last bottle of 2014 Luis Rodriguez \"Escolma\" Ribeiro Blanco. Have you ever felt like you \"won\" the wine list? That was the feeling I had, and the wine's honeyed Puligny-esque vibes thrilled me over the course of the whole meal. The arrival of Luis Rodriguez's wines immediately became an annual celebration for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLuis's winery is situated in the historical Ribeiro zone in Spain's northwestern Galicia region near the Portuguese border. The native grapes he has re-planted are mostly unseen and unheard of internationally, and they're not easy to pronounce; the local language there is Gallego, a language unique to Galicia that sounds like a blend of Spanish and Portuguese. A few hundred years ago, Ribeiro was a dominant wine region, and they sold many of their wines to the English. However, wars (and more wars) stifled the region's viticultural prowess. Rodriguez has ripped up the bulk Palomino and Alicante Bouschet grapes planted over the last century, and his mission has been to restore the primacy of the native grapes: Treixadura, Godello, Lado, and Albariño for whites and Brancellao, Souson, Caiño Tinto and Ferrol for the reds.  Enjoying these wines requires a leap of faith, and it's one I am going to ask you to take. The region's geographical location imparts wonderful food wines with terrific balance from the moderating Atlantic coastline, and its granitic, sandy soils offer sheer mineral character across wines of both colors.
