I love these wines because they are a contradiction of ideas. While they are a literal new kid on the block in a region full of centuries old wineries, the property is one of the oldest in the country. 80% of the vines on the estate are ungrafted and more than 60 years old. They are labelled as 'trocken', or dry wines, but have this efficacious, perfectly integrated sweetness that lingers beneath and drives the finish. The Escheburg is the best introduction to the estate style, a blend of several estate vineyards creating absurdly delicious dry Riesling with a kiss of 'hidden sweetness'. The Ellergrub is quickly becoming one of the estate's 'cultiest' wines, with prices escalating year over year. This 1.4 hectare pure blue slate vineyard from the magnificent 2016 vintage. He was also one of the first in Australia to use 100% whole cluster in his wines, and this Burgundian technique gives his wines a particular perfume and finesse that is hard to achieve in the New World. Well, if you haven€™t heard of  Frédéric Cossard, this famous natural winemaker actually was a dairy engineer who made cheese prior to becoming a highly sought after Burgundian winemaker. His philosophy in cheese-making is similar to his winemaking philosophy - pure, well cared for ingredients that are processed using minimal intervention, therefore allowing the final product to be demonstrative of the quality of its parts. Unlike many of his peers, Frédéric was not born into a winemaking family - he had to start his winemaking journey from scratch, no mean feat in Burgundy! His estate, Domaine de Chassorney, was created in 1996 and started with a few hectares of vineyards in the villages of Saint Romain and Auxey-Duresses. It has grown since then, and now covers 10 hectares across several villages.  Frédéric€™s approach to winemaking is rooted in a more €œnatural€ approach: this involves organic viticulture, spontaneous fermentation, whole cluster, as well as an emphasis on concrete and Georgian quevri instead of new oak. Frédéric also makes wine as a negociant under his own Frederic Cossard label. These wines are equally as good as those made under his Chassorney label, as Cossard works hand in hand with each individual grower to ensure that the vines are managed to his exacting standards. The huge success of Camartina, along with other Super Tuscans, forced a change to the appellation and blending rules in Tuscany. Camartina was so influential that Querciabella was invited to join 16 other estates in the Historical Super Tuscan Wine Committee, which honors their contributions to the history and promotion of Tuscan wines. Camartina continues to be the flagship wine of Querciabella, and it is only made in the best vintages in very small quantities. This wine is particularly meaningful to the Castiglioni family, as it is partially named after the founder's daughter, and the label features a painting by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eItalian painter Bernardino Luino. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe current blend is now 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese with 18 months in French oak (20% new), and it is not released until at least 30 months after harvest to ensure the wine has had ample time to mature. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape in the blend due to its highly successful adaptation to the soils of the estate's vineyards. The wines are rarely seen in the US, where the robust, unsulfured styles show poorly if not perfectly stored (like we do!). It's purely a passion project for us to carry these antique artifacts, which seek to recreate the style of wine produced in Sardinia for the last 3000 years. When Alessandro Dettori joined his father at the winery in 1990, it was a time of modernization. International grapes and new barrels were the predominant style. They vinify and release some of Sardinia's most quixotic wines, wines that defy categorization with their marriage of alcoholic solar power, textural profundity, and wild and untampered complexities. You'll find Cannonau (Sardinia's genetic sibling to Grenache), Vermentino, and dry Muscat in the releases below, but not in any form you have ever seen. The Dettori estate has renounced the insignificant local DOC's for each grape, choosing to release under the regional IGT for their northern corner of the island, the Romangia IGT. Wines are fermented spontaneously in concrete without temperature control, and are matured for between six months and five years. The sulfur usage here is minimal, so please keep care to store the wines at cellar temperature. When storage is correct, the magic can transcend the distance between us and Sardinia. The two \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eRenosu \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ewines are fruity quaffers for the summer picnics and cookouts, while the slightly orange \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDettori Bianco\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e is one of Italy's great examples of Dry Muscat. For a scarcely seen combo of hedonism and meditative sophistication, check out the reds from Sardinia's top red grapes. Barrel fermentation and lees aging lends a Burgundian patina to the style with a faint toasty reduction that I find exotic and thrilling. The quality here flirts with the weight and timbre that I adore in Grand Cru Chablis. The team that has been put together here also commands immediate respect with winemakers Federico Curtaz (ex Gaja) and Giandomenico Negro (ex Benanti) running the show.
