While their Pésus bottling goes for $500-600 and is one of the most adored in all of Spain for savvy insider collectors, the winery remains mostly overlooked in the United States. The Viña Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz is a bottling that is released only in top years in a volume of less than 500 six-pack cases for the world market. The vineyard was planted in 1946, and its ancient vines remain dry-farmed and bush-trained as is traditional. It's a deeply colored opaque style, matured in a combination of used Amerrican and French Oak barrels for five years, resulting in an exuberant and complex explosion of ripe black fruits, wine-soaked cedar and sandalwood, zesty five-spice powder, mocha, and scorched earth. The Regina Vides is even more special. with a 6,000 or less bottle production produced from goblet trained vines with an average age of over 100 years! This cuvée is sort of like the \"baby\" Pésus and sees 100% new French oak. The palate is dry and creamy with a slightly astringent mouthfeel due to the low 3.2 pH. It's still very young and was only bottled in July 2017, after some 18 months in new French oak barrels. I especially noticed the roasted and toasty, smoky aromas from the wood, but those should get better integrated with some more time in bottle. It's a heady and powerful red, but it's better balanced than the other wines from the year, which delivered very powerful and warm wines with high alcohol levels. At only 12% alcohol this evokes more of cool climate Syrah's savory leanings with Grenache-like juicy red \u0026amp; black fruit. 18 months in smaller oak barrels smooths out the gamey savory edges. The tannins are fine grained and there is an incredibly complex nose of cherry kirsch, blackberry, mace, clove, grilled meats and dried While their Pésus bottling goes for $500-600 and is one of the most adored in all of Spain for savvy insider collectors, the winery remains mostly overlooked in the United States. The Viña Sastre Pago de Santa Cruz is a bottling that is released only in top years in a volume of less than 500 six-pack cases for the world market. The vineyard was planted in 1946, and its ancient vines remain dry-farmed and bush-trained as is traditional. It's a deeply colored opaque style, matured in a combination of used Amerrican and French Oak barrels for five years, resulting in an exuberant and complex explosion of ripe black fruits, wine-soaked cedar and sandalwood, zesty five-spice powder, mocha, and scorched earth. The Regina Vides is even more special. with a 6,000 or less bottle production produced from goblet trained vines with an average age of over 100 years! This cuvée is sort of like the \"baby\" Pésus and sees 100% new French oak. The native grapes he has re-planted are mostly unseen and unheard of internationally, and they're not easy to pronounce; the local language there is Gallego, a language unique to Galicia that sounds like a blend of Spanish and Portuguese. A few hundred years ago, Ribeiro was a dominant wine region, and they sold many of their wines to the English. However, wars (and more wars) stifled the region's viticultural prowess. Rodriguez has ripped up the bulk Palomino and Alicante Bouschet grapes planted over the last century, and his mission has been to restore the primacy of the native grapes: Treixadura, Godello, Lado, and Albariño for whites and Brancellao, Souson, Caiño Tinto and Ferrol for the reds.  Enjoying these wines requires a leap of faith, and it's one I am going to ask you to take. The region's geographical location imparts wonderful food wines with terrific balance from the moderating Atlantic coastline, and its granitic, sandy soils offer sheer mineral character across wines of both colors.
