Trekking up to the top of Mount Veeder we run into a winery with a history going back to the late 1880's, a pioneer of high elevation Napa winemaking. Mayacamas's Cabernets are legendary, and we've enjoyed their aged releases back to the early 1970s. Their vineyards stretch as high as 2400 ft above the valley floor on Mount Veeder. The aspect, sunlight, soil erosion, and wind all lend their hand to developing deeply concentrated berries with acidity to last for generations (quite literally). The winemaking is old school and rustic with pressed juice going direct into concrete fermenters, then large format foudres (neutral oak barrels, some of them redwood!), the youngest of which is about 80 years old. This Chardonnay is in a middle age of development, moving from ripe apple, tropical fruits, and white flowers into roasted almond, orange peel, citrus marmalade, honeysuckle and jasmine.
