Remelluri has been synonymous with breaking boundaries since its inception. The earliest written records of Remelluri’s contribution to the wine world is 1596, and since the Rodriguez family purchased the property in 1967, the wines have represented a symbiosis of ideas that are rarely found in the wine world: Creative, forward-thinking viticultural practices, respect for local history & culture, and a deep admiration for their local terroir. While Lopez de Heredia has always released their single vineyard wines, the practice was no longer vogue. Blending across subzones had become the norm. In the modern era, Remelluri has lead the charge to restore the tradition of terroir in Rioja. Telmo Rodriguez has become a superstar winemaker with exceptional projects and properties throughout Spain, but this Gran Reserva is his most passionate project. From the outstanding 2010 vintage, it is one of the region’s greatest examples of the classic Tempranillo-based blend: floral and spicy nose, with a smooth palate reminding us of old school cola and a chocolate cordial, with a touch of forest underbrush and fired terra cotta. Telmo selects specific parcels of the oldest vines at some of the highest altitudes on the property for Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva. The blend includes a larger proportion of centennial Garnacha from a vineyard planted more than a hundred years ago at 750 meters in the foothills of the mountain. Granja Remelluri has a marked Atlantic character and goes through extended aging in large format foudre barrels for a long time, with further bottle age until they feel the Granja is ready to be released. The wine is powerful, but judicious in its application of said power. It’s a distinctive treasure of the Rioja region that I believe has an age-worthiness to challenge the greatest estates of Bordeaux. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in small wooden tubs. It was then aged for 24 months in all French oak: 1 to 5 year old barrels (225L, 400L, and 500L) and foudres ranging from 1,200L to 2,000L. Vine age is 40-90+ years of age. The blend is 70% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano.
