While Washington’s profile in the wine world has definitely been rising over the last decade, there are still only a handful of wineries that have really garnered major attention from critics and collectors, Figgins Estate is one to put on your radar. The estate was founded by Chris Figgins after he made his name as the winemaker for Leonetti Estate, which is widely considered one of the best wineries in Washington. While he continues to make wine at Leonetti, Chris wanted to start his own family project, and thus was born Figgins Estate. Besides its exceptional winemaker, Figgins is unique for American producers in that they only make one main wine. While this is relatively common in Bordeaux, where they use all their best grapes to make their “Grand Vin,” it is highly unusual in the United States, where most producers make a range of wines. Chris is a traditionalist and a believer in terroir, and so he only makes a single cuvée to showcase the terroir of this unique spot in Washington. Winemaking goes deep in the Figgins familty- Chris’ father Gary Figgins being the first person to plant vines in Walla Walla. Chris has his "roots" (pun intended) in this region, and his love of Walla Walla is reflected in this Bordeaux style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot. Winemaking is judicious, with aging done in first and second use French casks for 20 months, and now that the wine has 10 years of age, the fruit has had time to develop beautiful secondary and tertiary notes of leather, dried red and black currants, and tobacco.  - Meg Van Til
