Rhone Blends are like opinions. Everyone's got one, many are bad, and few are all that unique and memorable. When a producer tells me that they really upped the Cinsault in this year's blend andboy does it pop!I can't help feeling a little like I'm on a first date with someone who can't wait to tell me whyThe OfficeorFriendsis actually overrated.
And yet there's still plenty out there worth getting excited over (Rhône blends, I mean, we can't offer any dating advice). Pala's single vineyard stunner, S'Arai, is just that sort of wine. It follows enough of the formula to feel familiar- Cannonau (the local name for Grenache) and Carignano deliver ripe red berry, baked plum, spice, and savory herbs, and 10 months in barrique give it a certain degree of polish. But just when you think you've seen it all, there's a bit of Bovale Sardo, an indigenous Graciano clone, lending its elegant structure and age-worthiness. Then there's the concentration and intensity coming from the old, alberello-trained vines, not to mention the charm of it being an over performing wine from an underrated region like Sardegna. At seven years old the wine's showing a lovely balance of fruit and brooding gamey spice. It's ready to drink and ready to make you wonder what you ever saw in thoseotherRhone blends.
