What we are presenting to you today is a wine that is quickly becoming a new favorite of mine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and at insane values.

When Jeb Dunnuck was with Wine Advocate he famously wrote “few wines I’d rather have in my cellar (or better yet, on my dinner table), than (Domaine de la) Vieille Julienne.” I would have to agree with this sentimentJeb went on to declare the 2015 release as "the wine of the vintage".

While this isn't the 2015 release, the 2014 vintage has always held a nice spot in my heart for producing elegant and terroir-driven, more spice and herb-laden renditions of our favorite GSM blends. You'll hear sommeliers call it a "restaurant vintage". Wines that were elegant, high definition, and paired well with food. They are in a perfect drinking window right now. That's why we are excited for the price we got on this wax-dipped late release from this fast-rising estate.

Jean-Paul Daumen took the reins of Domane de la Vieille Julienne from his father in 1992 and now is joined by his own son, Antoine. In the northeast corner of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this biodynamically farmed estate totals 54 contiguous (rare in the appellation) acres of vines. As retailers, we have to pay attention to these things, but the Top 100 lists are typically more of a headache for us than anything because wines we adore that are already selling just fine immediately disappear from the market after landing placements. Vieille Julienne earned the #5 spot on Wine Spectator’s Top-100 wines of the year countdown just a couple of years ago. Then these simply vanished from the market as collectors across the globe scooped it up at inflated prices from any retailer. This 2014 is back and it's dipped in red wax as a library release from the estate. We are by far and away the best price in the country. The fruit comes from sandy soils and is composed of 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Mourvèdre/Cinsault. Aged in foudres for about 15 months. I call this an "I don't care who you are" wine. I don't care who you are, I highly recommend you buy this. You'll be upset you didn't buy more.

91-93 Points Josh Reynolds of Vinous:

“Inky ruby. A complex, deeply perfumed bouquet displays scents of boysenberry, cola, peppery spices and candied flowers, and a smoky mineral note emerges with air. Stains the palate with vibrant red and blue fruit and lavender pastille flavors; juicy acidity and a snap of white pepper provide focus and lift. Impressively balanced and densely packed, finishing with excellent persistence and smooth tannins that are quickly absorbed by the plush fruit.”
