The Eyrie Vineyards is one of the original historic wine estates in Oregon and by all accounts one of the most historic in this country. The origin story is a fascinating one. In the winter of 1965, after earning a degree in viticulture and enology from UC/Davis, and having spent time researching the vine in Europe, 25-year old David Lett moved to Oregon 'with 3,000 grape cuttings and a theory'. He planted the first planting of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and related varieties in the Willamette Valley, and the first Pinot Gris in America. Without David Lett and Eyrie vineyards, we could argue there would be no such thing as Oregon Pinot Noir.

Today, many of the greatest Oregon wines of the last fifty years have been from Eyrie Vineyards, with their 1975 South Block Pinot Noir topping some of the best of Burgundy in a Paris tasting back in 1979 of the top Pinot Noirs in the world. These wines are classically balanced, and could confuse you for good quality Burgundy with their subtle volcanic minerality and restrained oak usage. The style finds a great middle ground between ripeness and physiological flavor maturity. 10% whole cluster fermentation and always less than 25% new French barriques.
