Joseph Roty is one of the great producers of Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay that you may not run across if you're not busy reading through books about Burgundy. This 11th generation winemaking family has only 6ha of vineyard holdings. Production here is miniscule, and the humble family is shy about visitors. The wines however, are far from shy. Roty's Marsannay's could be considered the counter-balance to Bruno Clair's, one of the other leading lights of the village. These are deeply colored, serious Burgundies that don't slack on the intensity and oak, but they still scratch that Burgundy itch in a deeply satisfying way. It's almost as if the hue of the minerality in these wines is more dark and brooding than in other styles. Marsannay, the northernmost village-level AOP in Burgundy, offers tremendous value in warmer vintages like 2015 where the grapes can achieve the ripeness you might find in Chambolle-Musigny or Vosne-Romanée in other vintages.
