STEPHANE OGIER'S SCULPTS VELVETY NORTHERN RHÔNE BEAUTIES
In 1982, Michel Ogier walked away from two lucrative contracts with some of the biggest names in the Rhone: Chapoutier and Guigal. Where before he had been an unsung hero, supplying grapes for some of the world's most famous Cote-Rotie, he would set out to put his own name on the label. He built his winery slowly, but by 1995 had released his Belle Helene Cote-Rotie, one of the Rhone's truly iconic single vineyard wines.

Today, Michel's son Stephane helms the domaine. After studying in South Africa and Burgundy, Stephane's winemaking style is decidedly balanced. His wines are as informed by Swartland's brooding old vine Syrah as they are the delicate, flower-petal-and-dirt style of staunchly traditional Burgundy. The Cote-Rotie Reserve is one of Stephane's flagship wines, sourced from 11 select lieu-dits with hints of new barrique and lifted florals from small amounts of co-fermented Viognier. It's got polish and sophistication but never loses the signature olive tapenade and crushed allspice notes that give Rotie its rugged charm. Considering his top crus from the Northern Rhône regularly receive 100pts and go for nearly $500, this wine is a steal. The Rosine Viognier plays the delightfully vibrant younger brother to Stephane's Condrieu, showing perfumed notes of orange blossom, peach, pineapple, tangerine pith over a classically opulent, lush palate. Finally, the Cotes du Rhone is an Art of Cellaring staple- tellicherry peppercorn, cooked cranberries, and star anise place the wine head and shoulders above the usual Cotes du Rhone crowd. There's enough fine-grained tannin to pair perfectly with grilled pork but it's the sort of all purpose wine that you'll want to keep around.
