Sweet wine is one of those things people tend to love or hate, but we would challenge anyone to say they hate this fresh, easy-drinking example. Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is one of France's Vin Doux Naturels, which are fortified sweet wines from around the country, and this style comes more particularly from the Rhône Valley. Many examples of Vin Doux Naturels are produced across France, but Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise may be the most famous. Its production goes back centuries, as it was a favorite of Pope Clement V when the Papacy resided in Avignon instead of Rome in the 14th century, and Pliny the Elder thought of it as so fresh and lively that he described Muscat as the "vine of the bees.'  Today the wine is made from Muscat Blanc à Petis Grains, and in the case of Château Pesquié, the grapes come from the slopes of Mont Ventoux. What makes this wine special is that it is lightly fortified while still fermenting to stop fermentation of all the grape sugars and produce a sweet wine with slightly stiffer alcohol. The result is a harmony of lush tropical fruits, peaches, citrus, toffee, and soft white flowers. While it is sweet, it's very light rather than overtly cloying or heavy. Due to the light sweetness and freshening acidity, this wine is very versatile and can be served as an apéritif or paired with many cheeses, foie gras, fruits, and desserts. The locals of Rhône love to blend a little with diced melon to make a chilled melon soup in summer, which sounds perfect now that spring has arrived in Houston. - KER
