Nearly every wine-producing country has a region that focuses on Bordeaux varieties, but outside of a select few (Napa, Columbia Valley, Bolgheri), most just flirt with greatness. If there's one world-class wine region that has fully lived up to its birthright of crafting world-class Bordeaux blends, and gets mostly ignored by the American market, it is Margaret River. Yet, the Heritage Five of this region, as the founding members of the region are called, have long been staples in Australian cellars. We had the opportunity to taste back vintages of another Margaret River producer, Vasse Felix, dating back to the 1980s in 2019 and the results were mind-blowing. All of that however, pales to the reputation that Leeuwin Estate has built for its Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Their regular appearance in the annual 'Top 50/Top 100' Lists of your favorite wine magazines is no longer any surprise.  In 1973, the owner of the estate, Denis Horgan, met an American who was also interested in buying land in the area, 'to produce high quality varietal wine'. The name meant nothing to Horgan at the time, but the American man was Robert Mondavi, the late 'Grand Old Man' of American wine. Their partnership lasted until 1983, but the quality continues today. Horgan's instinct about his land proved correct: the first vines he planted included the Chardonnay patch known as Block 20 '“ his 'golden acre' (1.8 hectares) '“ which still produces the grapes that form the backbone of the Art Series Chardonnay. The style boasts extended skin contact, which offers a distinctively creamy texture and walks a tightline rope of brisk acidity, sunshine-y fruit, and multi-faceted minerality. The Cabernet on offer below is a tremendous value for those who like Napa fruit, but want to journey into the savory underbelly of Old World flavors without sacrificing texture and generosity. This is a shoo-in for those who like Heitz Martha's Vineyard, and it's one third the price. At twelve years old, the wine is in a fully blossomed, aromatic and blissful adolescent stage, and would be a striking centerpiece to any meal.
