These are young ageworthy Bordeaux, but as the 14th generation winemaker Pascal Amoreau says, "My wines taste old when they're young, and young when they're old." I have to agree with this sentiment. The balance of earth and fruit is strikingless seemless upon release, but this remains and only resonates more deeply as the wine ages. Don't believe me? Check out the 100-year Retrospective that Decanter did on Château Le Puy. The "Emilien" is the flagship wine of the estate. The blend is typically 85% Merlot, 7% Cabernet franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec and 1% Carménère, unusually incorporating a soupçon of Bordeaux's stepchildren, which originate from Southwest France, but are more famously grown in South America today. The wine spends its first year in large old foudre barrels and is then racked into very old 228L barriques. Medium-full bodied with graceful integration of its savory, earthy notes. Forest floor, bay leaf and dried ferns with more faint and integrated brett-driven notes than in the Duc De Nauves. Quantities limited.
