Clos des Papes is one of the truly legendary names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, so named because of the estate's close proximity to the home of the former pope that lived in the area in the 14th century. Owned by the Avril family, they have lived in the Southern Rhône for centuries and were one of the first estates to bottle their own wine in the region. Today the estate is run by Paul Vincent Avril, and he has a strong pedigree in winemaking after extended stints in Burgundy and Château Mouton Rothschild. The estate now has 40 hectares of vines, all planted to a wide variety of traditional Southern Rhône grapes. A part of the historical vineyards are enclosed in a stone wall that still stands today, which makes it a true clos. These wines are benchmark examples of high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but what makes them truly special are the low yields (only 1/3 of the yields permitted in the appellation), which bring an intensity like no other Southern Rhône blend. Clos des Papes' wines are also known for their incredible aging potential of 40 years or more.
