In a world where our wine options are practically inexhaustible, it can be immensely challenging to stand out and carve a niche for yourself, particularly in famous regions such as Burgundy and the Rhône. Éric Texier is one of the rare individuals who has succeeded at standing out in a sea of great winemakers. A Bordeaux native who has lived in or around Lyon since 1979, Éric is a jovial, energetic, and fun-loving person who wants his wines to make their drinkers happy. However, he is also a boundary pusher, endlessly questioning his own work (and, let's be honest, that of others) for the sake of moving viticulture and winemaking forward. He is a trailblazer, almost solely responsible for putting the almost extinct region of Brézème back on the radar of Syrah enthusiasts. Brézème is a unique little region situated between the Northern and Southern Rhône exclusively planted to Syrah for red grapes, but this is not your mothers Syrah. Éric leans toward minimal intervention wines, believing that the best wines are made in the vineyard. His Syrah is made using whole clusters, natural yeasts, with very little intentional additional extraction or maceration. I would say he dislikes new oak, but I believe that would be doing him a disservice. His particular phrasing to me when discussing the use of new oak on wine was, “I DETEST new oak.” He firmly believes in letting the grapes show off instead of being cloaked in oak, and therefore, aging is mostly done in concrete or very old oak foudres, with filtration and fining only when necessary. As much as the term “natural wine” can make fans of more classic style cringe, Éric Texier succeeds in making a natural wine that is not natty or funky. Instead it is powerful yet elegant and clean, with notes of violets, licorice, dark berries, black pepper, garrigue, and smoked meats. I could continue to wax eloquent about Éric and his beautiful wines, but in the meantime, we suggest you grab a bottle of this unique and delicious Syrah and let it speak for itself.
