We are always looking for the next great thing in the world of Burgundy, whether that constitutes an under-the-radar collectors item or just something incredibly delicious for a great value. These Michel Magnien wines definitely fall into that category. Located primarily in Morey-Saint Denis with vineyard holdings also Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, and Vosne Romanee (including Grand and Premier Crus holdings as well)  Michel Magnien’s family has been producing wine for five generations. While in the past they sold their fruit to negociants, beginning in 1993, with the encouragement of Michel’s son Frederic, they began bottling their entire harvest under their own label. Frederic spent time in both California and Australia, studying winemaking before returning to France to run the estate with his father. He facilitated the conversion of the estate to both organics and biodynamics, and while originally he favored the heavy use of French oak on his wines, he has since scaled way back and only uses old oak barrels and terracotta to age his wines. In fact, his winemaking style bears a striking resemblance to that of Laurent Ponsot, the rather infamous Burgundy producer. Though he does not care to be identified as an organic or biodynamic producer, he nonetheless practices both in his winemaking. Similarly to Magnien, he also uses no new oak and relies on spontaneous fermentation of juice in his wine production. In fact, Ponsot suggested that the hallmark of wines from Morey-Saint-Denis is balance and an avoidance of excess in any direction, and Magnien’s wines definitely deliver. So the next time you want Ponsot quality without the Ponsot pricepoint… you know where to look.

The soil of Les Argillières consists of limestone mixed with clay marl and contributes to the this wine’s perfume and finesse. Les Argillières shows red berries and floral aromas on the nose with an underpinning of minerals. Medium weight and fine tannins make for a more elegant village-level Chambolle. The wine is a pure expression of its terroir thanks to its élevage in a combination of used oak and clay jars.
