There are at least a few collectors who will be upset we let this secret out, but the wines of Gauby in Southern Roussillon are some of the best kept secrets in France. The humble estate is located in and around the tiny, bucolic Roussillon town of Calce, a short drive from the Cataluña border of Spain. The estate's dedication to ancient vines and biodynamics in this forgotten winemaking area has created a cult following amongst those who pursue these types of quietly iconic wines. The wines focus on Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan and are from some of the oldest vines in the region. Despite the warmth of this area, the wines possess a Burgundian elegance in style and the Christmas tree and mulling spice aromatics are simply outstanding. The Calcinaire is the most humble product from the estate, "Calcinaire" reflecting the origin of the wine, the village of Calce. The wine is on the fuller side of medium-bodied, with rustic, forest berry and wildflower aromatics that emphasize the freshness that can be captured in the soils of these special soils along France's southern border with Spain.
