The Grand Crus: Gary Pisoni's Single Vineyard Pinot
The supremely exciting thing about the SLH is how every producer, from custom crush mom & pops to Talbott, cares deeply about single vineyards. With daily temperature swings from 50 to 85 degrees, morning fog, hot sun, and afternoon winds hitting up to 30mph aspect is everything. Vineyard location and row orientation can mean the difference between fully ripened Syrah and waiting until October just to pick your Chardonnay over 3.0pH. Speaking to winemakers across the AVA, nothing carried the gravitas of Gary Pisoni's Gary's and Soberanes vineyards, now farmed by his son, Mark. Gary's Vineyard is the older of the two, facing southeast on a ridge offering some protection from both the afternoon sun and winds. The ridge is moderating factor that gives enough ripeness to avoid under ripe stems while avoiding sunburn in the cool but sunny region. Of the two vineyards, this is usually the riper, with older vines lending concentration to match. Soberanes sits directly across from Gary's with a slightly northerly aspect. As the younger of the two vineyards, it benefits from improved vineyard design meaning narrower rows planted north-south (Gary's is east-west) for more even ripeness. It's Pinot comes across as more delicate & floral with piercing acidity to support ageing.

In the winery, both bottlings see significant (20% and up depending on the vintage) whole cluster and about 40-45% new French oak. We tasted the 2018s and 2011s side by side and found the 18s to show expectedly exuberant & perfumed florals, candied cranberry, pomegranate, lavender and tarragon notes from the stem inclusion. The 2011s suggested these wines get much more exciting with age, gaining smoky barnyard aromas and an integration of herb and oak tasting something like hoja santa & crushed chai spice. These were truly the wines of the trip and we're thrilled to offer them both. We've also included Gary's entry level lineup, Luli, for those looking for more every day drinkers as well as his stunningly savory estate Syrah.
