THE SUNNY SIDE OF SANCERRE
The estate of Daniel Chotard is located in the village of Reigny, just outside of Sancerre itself, and the family has been making wine for over 200 years. Simon Chotard is the third generation winemaker, having taken over for his father, Daniel. Chotard produces a number of different classic red and white Sancerre cuvees, but the Cuvée Marcel Henri is particularly special. Composed of 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the grapes are from two of their oldest plots of 50 to 60 year old vines that are farmed organically. The wine is named after Simon's grandfather, Marcel, and great uncle, Henri, who each planted the vines now used for the cuvée. Kimmeridgian soils provide a saline minerality, but the Chotards harvest this cuvee later and give it extended lees aging, giving the wine richer texture and more tropical fruit than you'll find in your run-of-the-mill French cafe Sancerre.
