Produced from a single hectare of vines older than 250 years in age, making this site the oldest Albariño vines in the world. Upon travelling to Spain in 2012, the first wine region we visited was Rías Baixas, and the first winemaker I met was Gerardo Mendez of Do Ferreiro. We visited every single DO wine region in Galicia (he has projects everywhere), and then retired to a local seafood restaurant in Pontevedra where we sampled a dozen or more sea creatures whose existence I was unaware of. The evening culminated with a 2001 Do Ferreiro "Cepas Vellas". After cherishing the first half of the bottle, Gerardo poured the second half into the half-shell carapace of a centola, or Galician Spider Crab. We finished the evening passing the saucer shell of the sea creature around the table and drinking a potion of its rich juices blended with the region's oldest Albariño. Nearly ten years later, the wines remain a staple when I want to demonstrate that Albariño is more than an inexpensive, fruit-forward picnic wine. This wine is only released in the best years, and is packed with powerful citrus, stonefruit, and grapefruit, but backed by an intensely mineral, sea spray minerality. This wine is absolutely top notch now, but will be better with a few years to uncoil a bit. Within the pantheon of top Albariño bottlings, this is in the ruling triumvirate. Think of this in terms of a Grand Cru-esque Grosses Gewächs Riesling from Germany. It breaks the mold for Albariño.

Trying Cepas Vellas is like watching a good Pixar movie. You expect it to be good for an Albarino, what you don't expect is the seriousness. Like Toy Story or the Incredibles, the wine holds on to its grapefruit peel-dancing-with-a-fruit-cup playfulness while conveying a depth and complexity that feels totally of another genre. I could talk about the 120+ year old vines or the extensive lees aging but it's really a wine that must be tried to be believed.
