ALSACE BENCHMARK BRANCHES OUT WITH 'GRAND CRU' SKIN CONTACT WINE

70% Gewurztraminer and 30% Pinot Gris. Orange wine.

Weinbach is a pretty universal name when it comes to Alsatian wines, and for good reason. The property has been planted with vines since the 9th century and was established as a winery in 1612 by Capuchin friars, and they are known by wine enthusiasts and sommeliers across the nation as one of the most classic of all Alsatian producers. Less well known than the name itself, however, is the fact that Domaine Weinbach is certified both organic and biodynamic, with an emphasis on respecting and reflecting each of the grape varieties' own qualities and characteristics. Crazy as it may sound to someone used to drinking these beautifully clean and classic wines, this throws Weinbach right into the natural wine world. It is, therefore, only natural that Weinbach would eventually embrace a piece of that and produce a skin macerated wine; MT0.This wine is a blend of Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, and definitely shows by its color that these grapes are not technically white grapes, but have some pink to them. While these are grapes that are not typically known for having much acid, the skin maceration adds some subtle tannins to the wine which bolsters the structure in lieu of high acid. It is aromatic and fresh with beautiful grapefruit character, and as Justin Vann from Nancy's Hustle puts it, is 'in addition to the already wild cornucopia of fruit these grapes offer.' It is a beautiful marriage of the classic and the natural - it has the potential to appeal to those who may not see orange wine as a relevant style, while at the same time, shows that old dogs can indeed learn new tricks and adjust to new trends in the wine world. Whether you've been feeling apprehensive about jumping on the orange wine train, or you're a diehard natty daddy who hasn't been excited about Weinbach in the past, this is a perfect wine to explore without having to go to far toward the opposite end of the spectrum. Because this skin contact wine is made from two grape varieties it cannot be labelled Grand Cru, but it is sourced from the Grand Cru of Furstentum.

Three week skin contact fermentation with indigenous yeasts, then 8 months aging. Grand Cru Furstentum: marl and limestone, south-east facing soil. The steep slope optimizes exposure to the sun. It produces opulent Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris with great aromatic complexity, elegant structure, and good aging potential. Because this is a skin contact wine from 2 grapes varieties with no added sulfites, this wine cannot be labeled Grand Cru.
