Hubert Lignier is of particular note as one of my favorite producers out of Morey-St-Denis. The domaine's style is concentrated with some use of whole cluster, and a minimal use of new oak never over 30%. I opened the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 'Bussieres' on Sunday night and it was outstanding so I feel I can give this lineup my full enthusiasm. If you're unfamiliar, it's likely because the estate had some legal troubles with inheritance over the last two decades after Hubert's first son Romain had a tragic young death from cancer in his early 30s. His fairly new American wife took over the domaine, but the Lignier family was not too happy and spent the next decade in a battle to recover the estate. That being said, it was previously one of the most prestigious estates in the Côtes de Nuits with a style known for a Burgundian power and concentration without leaning into the danger zone of overextraction and overoaked styles. Today however, under Neal Rosenthal's import portfolio, the wines remain well-priced and affordable, and these historic old vine vineyards have returned to the Hubert Lignier label, along with some newly tweaked winemaking. While true Burgundy lovers jumped with joy for this return in 2015, with the family tragedy and ensuing events of the 2000s, the market has been slow to respond to the return. It's a good thing though as they haven't incurred the Burgundy hype jump that runs the premier crus to the $200+ Grand Cru range. That being said, I feel they are worthy of that kind of attention. While son Laurent Lignier is under Hubert's direction, he has made some generational change in winemaking. Whole cluster fermentation is now being tastefully used in a style that very much reminds me of why I love the Lignier-Michelot wines...go figure! The estate was also converted to biodynamics. In warm vintages like 2018, Morey-St-Denis can usually be trusted for restraint, and I highly recommend these wines for your cellars.
