SOAVE CRACKS ITS GLASS CEILING: INAMA’S SINGLE VINEYARDS

Carricante from Mount Etna, Verdicchio from the Adriatic coast, and Trebbiano Abruzzese are among the world’s great Italian wines. They all have the capacity to mature and evolve over the course of many years, but so does Soave in the right hands. Unfortunately, Soave is the victim of its past success and of the producers who monopolized on that success to fill their pockets. Soave enjoyed quite a bit of popularity through the second half of the last century. This created a number of issues, the first being the drastic increase of vineyards, especially in the plains, that now make up much of the Soave DOC. Also yields for the productive Garganega grape variety creeped upwards, resulting in bland, aqueous solutions of citrus and peach-flavored quaffing wine. The dedication of a handful of producers has turned this around though. Here is a primer on this emerging region of focus.

The Soave region is located in Northeast Italy, the Veneto, and more specifically, immediately east of the city of Verona. Soave itself is a picturesque town enclosed by a Medieval castle and walls that surround its historic streets and buildings. The best soils of the region are stony and volcanic, providing excellent drainage and exposure for high quality white wines. The region has begun delimiting single vineyard crus and producers are now experimenting with later harvest dry wines that even include some botrytized fruit to profound results. At Inama, one of the region’s elite producers, things have improved steadily, resulting in a tremendous set of 2019 releases at great prices. They’ve dropped their smaller barrels in favor of larger barrels and begun releasing single vineyard Soave Classico’s with low yields, transparent winemaking and intense flavors. For lovers of the world’s great white wines, it is time to welcome Soave back into your cellar, and Inama is a perfect place to start.

94 Points Vinous: “The 2019 Soave Classico Foscarino i Palchi Grand Cuvée shows more orange oils than lemon with exotic florals and wet stone. It’s amazingly textural and deep with a candied hint to its vibrant orchard fruits. This is less mineral-forward and instead richer than the rest of the portfolio, even showing a bit of almond paste that compliments the ripe orchard fruits within. The finish is long and staining, leaving primary fruits and nuanced tannins. Through it all, remarkable freshness is maintained. This is Inama’s new super-selection that’s matured all in 2nd and 3rd pass twelve hectoliter casks. It’s a large scaled feel that should age effortlessly.
