An intoxicating and arguably illegal blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Pinot Auxerrois, Pinot Beurot, Muscat Blanc, and Traminer.

While France is notoriously strict about what grapes grow in what regions, the focus still is typically on region over grape. You’ll never see Pinot Noir or Chardonnay listed on Burgundy label, but Alsace is the one exception to the rule. While Alsace definitely has a sense of place, it is the only region to allow it’s premium wines to be varietally labeled. While this is now accepted practice throughout the region, Jean-Michel Diess has pushed back hard against this practice. He inherited one of the premium vineyards in the region, and quickly discovered that the whole vineyard was interplanted with a bunch of different grape varieties, making it impossible to make 100% varietal wines. He realized that there was magic in these vineyards, and actually replanted all of his top vineyards as field blends, in defiance of the grand cru tradition in Alsace. He believes that these field blends, which comprise both allowable varietals and ancient Alsatian varietals, better show the terroir and potential of Alsace than individual varietal wines. While these ancient varietals are technically illegal, Jean-Michel is battling with authorities to get them authorized. And when you taste this wine, you’ll understand his enthusiasm for field blends. While this wine is technically a blend of the 13 allowable Alsatian varieties, in actuality this wine is a blend of 41 different grape varietals. How’s that for a blend? This wine is fresh and dynamic, with perfect balance and weight - it shows notes of ripe pineapple, lemon, green apple, peaches, orchard blossoms, river rocks, and about 100 other things. If you haven’t had the wines of Marcel Deiss before, this is a great introduction to why he is considered one of the top producers in Alsace.
