A truly patriotic Italian Cabernet you say? How could that be? The Mazzei family's history with the Fonterutoli estate dates to 1435, making it one of Tuscany's great historic estates. One of the family's descendant's, Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), was known to have a strong friendship with none other than Thomas Jefferson. Their relationship reportedly grew out of conversations covering viticulture in early Virginia, political thinking, innovation, and patriotism for one's country. In fact, according to John F. Kennedy's book, "A Nation of Immigrants", the great doctrine ‘All men are created equal’, incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Philip Mazzei, an Italian-born patriot, and close friend of Jefferson’s." The estate has always been on the modernist viticultural forefront, and today they use Mr. Merlot, Carlos Ferrini, as a consultant enologist for their wines. Ferrini is known for consulting on projects such as Castello dei Terriccio, San Leonardo, and Poliziano. As such, these wines are recommended for those seeking plush, fruit-forward, and polished styles of Cabernet that bridge the gap between the classic structural grip of Italian wines and the lush fruit and oak profiles of American wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is pulled from two sources. The best fruit from Castello di Fonterutoli in the Chianti Classico zone is combined with the best from the Belguardo Vineyard in Maremma. The final wine is aged in 30% new French and American Oak for 18 months. - Brandon
