Savvy Cab for the Savvy Drinker
California Cabernet is considered classic for a reason, and is widely prized for its rich, ripe style. As areas like Napa and Sonoma continue to climb in price, one of the challenges for the savvy consumer is finding Cabernet Sauvignon that is high quality and delicious without breaking the bank, something that is increasingly challenging to find when the phrase “Napa Valley” graces the label. That is where regions like San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles come into play. These up-and-coming wine regions represent regions that can make great wine for amazing value, and one of our current favorites is My Favorite Neighbor. They are based in San Luis Obispo and focus on sustainable production from local vineyards (hence the name!) in addition to their own. As they say, it takes a village to make great wine, and their partnerships with other meticulous farmers in the area show in this delicious bottle of Cab. The 2019 is a great vintage - there was abundant winter rain and a long, moderate growing season which allowed for extended hang times and exceptional quality of fruit. There is an abundance of red fruit on the nose, including red cherry, raspberry and strawberry, and well as savory notes of wild herbs and a kiss of toasted marshmallow from oak and malolactic fermentation. The palate is plush and ripe which notes of black cherry, plum, fig, violets, and underlying tones of coffee and creme brulee. At this pricepoint, it’s going to be hard to find another Cabernet that delivers like this.
