CENTRAL COAST TRIUMPHS WITH CLONE OF BEAUCASTEL'S VIEILLES VIGNES BLANC

Just in case you don't want to read all of this, let me just say that this is the best edition of Tablas Creek's Roussanne I have ever had. For those unfamiliar with Roussanne, here's a bit of a Roussanne 101. In the Southern Rhône, Roussanne is one of six white grapes permitted in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it is often blended with Grenache Blanc, whose richness and crisp acids highlight Roussanne’s rounded pear and honey flavors. In the Northern Rhône, Roussanne is frequently blended with Marsanne in the appellations of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint Joseph to provide acidity, minerality and richness. As a single varietal wine, it reaches its pinnacle as the sole component of Château de Beaucastel’s Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, which has now achieved the dreaded "allocated" status and runs nearly $200 a bottle.

Enter Tablas Creek, a winery founded by a collaboration between the Haas family of importer Vineyard Brands and the Perrin family of Chateau Beaucastel. In 1989, the winery was built in Western Paso Robles and the families determined it should be the epicenter for the Rhône Invasion of California. They not only planted vineyards but also created a carbon copy of the Beaucastel nursery in Paso with the full roster of Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties. The winery has since provided nearly all the vine material for Rhône varieties in California. This Roussanne, which roundly defeated the flagship Esprit Blanc (formerly known as the Esprit de Beaucastel) this vintage, is aged in demi-muids, barriques, and foudres. The oak is present and well-integrated. In this low-yielding vintage, the wine is concentrated, plush, and textural with a honeyed, creamy decadence.  From all the way in California, Tablas Creek delivers a resolute and booming response to the 98 point scoring Beaucastel Blanc Vieilles Vignes from this same vintage for a quarter of the price.
