Pierre Gaillard was always destined to be a great winemaker, despite the fact that he did not have the pedigree. He grew up as the son of a railway man, but he was deeply passionate about wine and started working in vineyards at the young age of 12. Following his dream to be a vigneron, he went to oenology school in Burgundy and was inspired to come to the Northern Rhône by fellow classmate Gilbert Clusel of the famous Côte-Rôtie estate Clusel Roche. Upon arriving in the Rhône, Pierre worked with some of the most important producers and vineyards in the region, starting with an extended time with Marcel Guigal. Under his apprenticeship, Pierre was part of the team that planted Guigal's ultra-famous La Turque vineyard. Pierre established his namesake domaine in 1986 in the small town of Malleval with a small 2.3 hectare plot of vines in the ancient Clos de Cuminaille plot in Saint-Joseph and later managed to acquired a paltry 0.25 hectare parcel in Côte-Rôtie. He has since expanded his estate to a number of notable parcels across the Northern Rhône, including some choice lieux-dits on the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde in Côte-Rôtie. He also joined forces with other icons of Syrah, Yves Cuilleron and Francois Villard, to form a collaboration project known as Vins de Vienne, which is dedicated to producing wines from historic plots across the Northern Rhône.

The Clos de Cuminaille is Pierre's signature wine, produced from an ancient vineyard site that was farmed by the Romans. This 100% Syrah is fully destemmed, and the wine is matured for 18 months in oak (40% new) with Pierre's special micro-oxygenation technique to help stabilize the wine and allow it to age even longer.

We also have Pierre's Côte-Rôtie, which is a blend of fruit from the Fongeat, Côte Blonde, and Viallière lieux dits, and it's composed of 90% Syrah with 10% Viognier blended in to add color stability and a beautiful perfumed note to the wine. Each lieux-dit is vilified separately to ensure the unique terroir is preserved and then aged for 18 months in French oak (50% new). All of Pierre's wines are traditional and gorgeous examples of what makes Syrah from the Northern Rhône exceptional.
