Continuing on the never ending Riesling theme, we are please to have another Vom Boden wine to offer you; 2 vintages of Stein Blauscheifer Trocken Riesling. Dr Ulrich Stein (or Ulli) as he is commonly known, has a deep love for the steep, slate slopes of the Mosel, and there are 2 things that make him stand out among the crowd. First and foremost, he and his family have strong convictions regarding the importance of old vines, so much so that they have never grafted their vines onto American rootstock. This has allowed Ulli to work with a large collection of old and ungrafted wines (he farms about 10% of all Germany’s ungrafted vines!) Secondly, he specializes in vineyard sites that are wildly inhospitable in their steepness, commercially unknown and therefore, barely financially viable. He has absolutely earned the stardom that is coming to him late in his career as his wines truly are a labor of love. His focus is on wines that are dry, and have been since the beginning, in spite of demand for wines with a level of sweetness and sugar. The Blausheifer Riesling comes from old vineyards, within and around the St. Aldegunder Himmelreich, one of Stein’s best vineyards.  With so much labor being put into each and every wine, it’s hard to believe that they are under $25 a bottle. - Meg Van Til
