Côte-Rôtie Flavor, Languedoc Charm: A Gift That Keeps on Giving
If only there were more of it available, Pic Saint Loup in the Languedoc should be known as the greatest value appellation in all of France. Last week, I had a wonderful conversation with another Houston Master Sommelier who curates programs around world-class beef (Guess who?!). The gist of it was that the Languedoc is the great underdog champion for Texas drinkers. It should be our most celebrated French region for USDA Prime Beef tempering wine. We should be shaking hands with happy guests and customers every day and night while they leave singing the praises of the Languedoc and the limestone-heavy Pic Saint Loup. Yet both the Languedoc and my favorite "subzone" remain in relative obscurity for most French wine lovers. Imagine a nod towards the seductive weight and velvet of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines at Côte du Rhône prices, but with a spicy limestone-infused twist.

Pic Saint Loup has a few extraordinary things going for it (in addition to its blink once and you'll miss it pricing). This skyrocketing region lies 20 minutes inland from Montpellier and sits at a distinct transition from Mediterranean scrubland (think thyme and sage heavy garrigue) to the upper inland plateau. We begin to get altitude here and the climate shifts notably, providing a cool enough transition to allow for Syrah to peep its mysterious, spicy, and smoky-eyed character back into the room. Second, if you've ever enjoyed the mind-boggling wines of Erix Texier on Brézème in the Northern Rhône, this is the same secret ingredient. Syrah on limestone strikes again in Pic Saint Loup just like in the storied terroir of Brézème. We have the perfect trifecta here: sunny fuller-bodied mediterranean warmth, taut limestone minerality, and absolutely spot-on Syrah typicity with all the peppercorn and incense fireworks you could ever need wrapped up in a velvet cloak. It's a bit of a cooler vintage here so there's a tad more freshness than is normal which I think is great for a region like Pic Saint Loup. This biodynamic estate finishes their wine in a mix of new and used barrel, small and large offering a mellowed style even in its youth. You won't find this value very often. It has been two years since it last came to Texas. We snagged as much as we can get our hands on and we encourage you to purchase by the 6-pack if you want a perfect Texas steak wine for under $30.
