Kumeu River has meteorically risen in popularity in the somm world, so much so that we've watched their single vineyard wines go from fascinating oddities to allocated rarities. The wines balance immaculately ripe, vibrant stonefruit with steely minerality and flinty reduction reminiscent of top Meursaults. We had the pleasure of tasting an impressive lineup of Kumeu’s wines a few months ago with their winemaker M.W. Michael Brajkovich (first Master of Wine from New Zealand!), and we continue to be blown away. All of cuvées are made using spontaneous fermentation, neutral oak, and go through full malolactic fermentation. Extended lees aging and battonage (accentuated by a screwcap closure) balance it all out with freshness and reduction, and sulfur is used sparingly as needed.

The Brajovich family has been making wine in New Zealand since immigrating there from Croatia in the early 1900s, and it’s safe to say that Michael carries on the family legacy in a spectacular fashion, continuing to create wines with distinctive terroir, elegance and balance. The style on the single vineyards is typically reductive and flinty, but with a gentle lift of New World sunshine to give the wines roundness and richness. They are typically a bit silent for a year or two and will slowly gain in aromatic intensity and weight over 5-10 years. There isn't a sommelier worth their salt on the planet who doesn't give these wines respect, and for good reason. They are one of the few producers to have truly competed with Burgundy outside of the Côte d'Or. Think Hyde de Villaine Chardonnay but a touch leaner and with more focus and minerality. It’s no wonder that every time we restock these wines they fly out of the door! - Meg Van Til
