Under the Tuscan Sun... with Sauvignon Blanc?
When you think of Tuscany, and specifically, Brunello, white wine probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. If it is… please send me an email and let me know what white wine that is so I can go and find it. There are, however, some hidden white wine gems in the beautiful land of Tuscany, and this Sauvignon Blanc by Sesti is one of them. Producer Giuseppe Sesti did not plan to become a winemaker - his background is in art and music, and with a little bit of imagination, you can taste that background in his wines. He does not have any legal certifications labeling his wine as organic or biodynamic, as nothing currently meets the family’s “personal standards” but he and now his daughter (who is fully involved in the production process) believe that it is the raw material that makes the wine what it is - aka the grapes. While he is known for his Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, he also produces this Sauvignon Blanc. It’s hard to believe this little Italian gem is on the market almost by accident - it started as a small family project so that the family could have something cool and refreshing to drink during the long, hot Tuscan summers. When friends and family started trying it, they were forced to increase production as people just started ordering it! Crisp and racy, this delicious white wine is aged in stainless steel and malolactic fermentation is studiously avoided, allowing it to maintain its zippy freshness. Expect bright acidity, citrus, green apple, florals, all with some lovely nuance.
