DIAMOND IN THE RHÔNE ROUGH: GOURT DE MAUTENS

We know how serious it is to suggest you spend this kind of money on a non-appellation wine from the southern Rhône that is not Châteauneuf-du-Pape. However, Gourt de Mautens is one of the treasures of the wine world, and if you ever buy wines of this price point, we can guarantee you that this wine can run circles around most Châteauneuf-du-Pape. So, that being said, onto the wine. Gourt de Mautens is located outside of CDP in the Southern Rhône, in a town known as Rasteau. There’s a tradition in the region for ‘elevating’ or ‘upgrading’ villages to receive their own appellation. After demonstrating a consistent quality level across the village, these towns will be awarded their own AOP. For example, the most famous value village AOPs for CDP-esque styles would be Gigondas, followed by Vacqueyras, with Rasteau being a relative newcomer. These are zones about 20km outside of the more famous CDP zone, using the exact same grape varieties with very similar soils but they lack the fame. Tou can find the best wines in the region for $75, while in CDP you're usually getting entry-level wines at these prices. The Rasteau AOP was traditionally for sweet port-styled wines, but in 2010 they began allowing dry reds under the appellation. At this time Jerome Bressy's wines (Gourt de Mautens) were the most famous in the zone, but the AOP decided to restrict grape varieties to only Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. So he left the Rasteau AOP (or technically, he never joined!) and releases his wines as IGP Vaucluse, meaning they are labelled under the broad geography of the Vaucluse political departement. He uses a tremendous swath of native Rhône grapes in these wines: Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Bourboulenc, Clairette, Picardan, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, Picpoul Blanc, Picpoul Gris. The 2015 Gourt de Mautens is powerful and rich, with a mélange of peppercorn, floral, and smoke character. This richness is counterbalanced by some polished tannic grip that results in a push-pull of dramatic flavors and textural enjoyment.
