THE PERFECT VINTAGE IN CHAMPAGNE BLENDED WITH A RESERVE SOLERA DATING TO 1985
Before saying anything specifically about the producer, I'd just add that this is a true Vin d'Emotion, and may be a better snapshot of what is contemporary, significant, and most importantly, beautiful, in the region better than anything else I can remember. With the surge in interest for Grower's Champagne, or smaller, artisanal, estate-bottled Champagne produced from grapes and land owned by the winemaker, Champagne has seen an explosion of new producers.  In 1986, Eric Dhondt and Edith Grellet decided to stop selling off grapes to negociants and started Dhondt-Grellet. The Dhondts were Belgian farmers in origin, and Adrien's grandfather had purchased vines in the Sézannais in the 1960s; the Grellets, by contrast, are natives of the Côte de Blancs grand cru villages, Cuis and Cramant. The estate began as 2 hectares in 1986, and Eric and Edith's contribution can be felt today, particularly with a perpetual reserve/solera they had the foresight to begin with their first vintage and maintain until today. The estate has tripled in size to a still very tiny six hectares, and is located in the sleepy hamlet of Flavigny, located immediately east of the Avize Grand Cru and separated by a kilometer. Keen readers will note the parallel with the Dhondt-Grellet solera and Jacques Selosse, whose estate is located in Avize next door. At Dhondt-Grellet, the next generation has taken over, and the wines have exceeded all expectations under the guidance of 20-year-old wünderkind, Adrien Dhondt. Adrien, though incredibly young, has experience beyond his years, and the influence of Burgundy is palpable in the wines' texture and vinosity. Dhondt lists Coche-Dury, Vincent Dancer & Jean-Yves Bizot among his inspirations, and very much is inspired by the wines of Jacques Selosse. Seventy percent of the Dans un Premier Temps... consists of the picture perfect 2015 vintage in Champagne, and this is demonstrated by an immaculate, dense core of perfectly ripe citrus and stonefruit. However, the other thirty percent is built from the family's perpetual reserve, whose wines are a blend of each vintage dating back to 1986. This supplements the wine with vivid toasted sourdough bread and grilled ciabatta character that serves as a foundation of deep complexity. The blend is 50% Chardonnay from the weightier southern Sezanne, 30% Pinot Noir from Avenay Val d'Or and 20% old vine Pinot Meunier from Cuis. As Adrien carries the torch of the new generation, and as a grower Champagne from a tiny estate with nowhere to move but upward, this wine represents the best that Champagne has to offer in every conceivable facet for this price. I urge you to try this bottle and pay attention for the single vineyard wines when we receive them later this year. - BK
