Françoise Bedel is a true trailblazer of Champagne- she ran her entire estate by herself for decades all while being one of the first producers in the region to transition to biodynamics. Françoise was inspired to change her vineyards to biodynamics and organics decades ago when one of her young sons fell ill. At the time, she was a single mother of two young boys, struggling to keep the estate afloat while caring for her children. After many failed traditional medical treatments, a homeopathic doctor was able to cure her son, and this inspired Françoise to eliminate chemicals from her vineyards and turn to more natural production and farming methods. Her small 8.4 hectare vineyard holdings and estate are based around the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne in the western edge of the Vallée de la Marne. The majority of her vines are meunier, with small amounts of pinot noir and chardonnay mixed in, and her wines are incredible examples of what meunier is capable of producing. The dedication to meticulous farming and viniculture produces wines of tremendous complexity and intensity. Each of her parcels is vinified separately in a combination of oak barrels or enameled vats. The blending process can take months, as Françoise believes extra care must be taken to ensure the resulting blend is a true expression of her terroir and the vintage. Wines are often left on their lees for 6 years or more, and no wine is released until at least 5 years post harvest. Françoise is so detailed and precise with her winemaking that even the riddling and disgorging is done by hand. The “Cuvée Origin’elle” Extra Brut is a representation of all of her plots, and the wine elegantly displays the freshness and rich fruit found in meunier based Champagnes. The “Dis, Vins Secret” Extra Brut is a bottling of 100% meunier from heavier clay and silt soils, giving the resulting wine a deeper palate after being aged for 5 years.  The “L’Ame de la Terre” Brut is her richest style we have on offer today, having been aged on the lees for 10 years! Françoise’s wines are exceptional examples of the Vallée de la Marne and represent incredible value grower Champagnes.
