THE ROMEO AND JULIET OF GROWER GRAND CRU CHAMPAGNE

The Champagne on offer today comes from a marriage of two growers, and the estate is part of a new generation of growers in Champagne, founded only in 2008. Richard Petit's family roots in Avize go back centuries, caring for Chardonnay on the chalk soils of the Côte de Blancs. Véronique Bajan's clan hails from Pinot Noir terroir to the north in Verzenay, a grand cru village in the Montagne de Reims. This combination created a bit of an unusual occurrence. Most growers stick pretty closely to their subzone (Côtes de Blancs, Montagne de Reims, Valle de la Marne, etc), but with plots in red grape and white grape county, this marriage presents a best of both worlds opportunity that we typically only find united under the label of a major negociant house like Bollinger.  With just over two acres of Chardonnay vines in the Côtes de Blancs Grand Crus of Avize, Cramant and Oger, and five acres of Pinot Noir in the Verzenay (Montagne de Reims), all vineyards are rated grand cru and are cared for sustainably by a husband and wife team. With Richard's attention to detail in the fields and Véronique's tasting prowess in the cellar, the small-batch, grand cru wines of Petit & Bajan are very much the voice of Champagne's new generation. At just $50, this is a bold, balanced wine that breaks records for NV Grand Cru Champagne. It was aged for an astonishing seven years on the lees before release, nearly three times the required time. And lastly, the opulence of the fruit (Petit & Bajan is commonly one of the last producers to harvest their fruit in Avize, the other being Jacques Selosse). That being said, richness and texture are not lacking. The elegant equilibrium between the fierce Chardonnay minerality and the softened depths of soulful Pinot Noir is apparent from the first smell to the last sip. The palate is mouth-filling for Champagne, and is punctuated by flavors of various citrus fruits, creamy red and yellow apple, apricot, grilled pineapple, toasted almonds, golden brioche, and crushed minerals in the form of oyster shell, chalk, and crushed rocks.
