2000 Luis Pato Beiras Cabernet Sauvignon

Here's what makes this bottle stranger and better than a mere curiosity: the Cabernet vines weren't even Luis's idea. His father João, the man who first bottled estate wine in Bairrada back in 1970, planted them in the heaviest clay portions of the property, the soils too dense even for Baga's tastes. Luis, the devoted Haut-Brion lover, vinified them in 2000, then spent the next quarter century declaring the result unworthy of the family name and refusing to release it. The joke is that the wine aged into exactly what he loved: mature, savory, old-school Cabernet with cedar, aged leather, and soaked currant, the kind of bottle that reads like old Graves or, if your reference points run Californian, old Mount Eden. Twenty-six years of free cellaring at the estate, released only because the winemaker retired and his daughter overruled him. There will never be another vintage. The ugly duckling, it turns out, was a swan the whole time.
