BAVA: AFFORDABLE AGED PIEDMONT
There are always more famous wines (and if you want a Mascarello or a Conterno we can find that for you), but it's so supremely refreshing to find aged, perfectly stored and protected Piedmontese wines at reasonable prices. For those looking for a special bottle of Nebbiolo or Barbera around $100 for the holidays, you've found it.

The Bava family has been growing grapes around Monferrato since 1600, but they built their first wine cellar in 1911. For the last hundred years, they've been humble stewards of their land. After the second world war, Bava was a major name in Piedmont wine commerce, but only recently have the wines been brough to my attention. Fermentations and macerations are mostly traditional, meaning LONG and oxidative, delivering those dried red fruits and autumnal flavors with cigar wrapper, fennel, and porcini mushroom. Older generations relied on barrique, but the newest generation has been progressive, staying true to French oak but reverting to large botti for the long sleep that delivers one of the world's great wines. The Barolo's come from the Scarrone cru in Castiglione Falletto, the cru that is home to Vietti's iconic old vine Barbera release and lies neighbor to one of Barolo's most elite crus, Rocche di Castiglione. They are in a perfect drinking window.

While most of you will dart directly to the Barolo's, I'd encourage the more open-minded and adventurous to give the Barbera's a shot. They are more friendly for guests (read: less tannic and more fruit), and these bottlings are truly unique. While these older labels read Barbera d'Asti Superioe - Nizza, the wines today would be labelled as Nizza DOCG, and it will take no time in the glass for you to agree this terroir delivers Barbera that transcends a humble bistro wine.  Contrary to expectations, this Piedmont estate believes that Barbera is their star grape. Their oldest Barbera vineyards are from Nizza, and it's the flagship grape of the house. Both of these vintages offer stellar proof of Barbera's ageability and give excellent complexity for the price.
