Querciabella is one of the historic Italian estates that helped put Super Tuscans on the map. Founded by Guiseppe Castiglioni, the estate has been a benchmark in Tuscany for decades. Along with such iconic wines as Antinori's Tignanello and Montevertine's Le Pergole Torte, Querciabella caused a sea change in Chianti with the release of Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon blend Camartina in 1981. The original wine was a major rule breaker in Chianti due to the inclusion of the 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot. The huge success of Camartina, along with other Super Tuscans, forced a change to the appellation and blending rules in Tuscany. Camartina was so influential that Querciabella was invited to join 16 other estates in the Historical Super Tuscan Wine Committee, which honors their contributions to the history and promotion of Tuscan wines. Camartina continues to be the flagship wine of Querciabella, and it is only made in the best vintages in very small quantities. This wine is particularly meaningful to the Castiglioni family, as it is partially named after the founder's daughter, and the label features a painting by Italian painter Bernardino Luino. The current blend is now 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese with 18 months in French oak (20% new), and it is not released until at least 30 months after harvest to ensure the wine has had ample time to mature. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape in the blend due to its highly successful adaptation to the soils of the estate's vineyards. The 2016 Camartina is showing more of the sharp acid and red fruit of the Sangiovese right now, and will continue to develop and mature in the bottle for decades to come.
