A LOVE SONG TO FUNK: DOMAINE LEON BARRAL
My first taste of Didier Barral's Faugeres came with a warning: 'This wine might smell a little bit.' And smell it did. Blackberries, rubbed sage, campfire smoke, and all the funkiness of a horseback ride through a rainy pine forest. As 100% biodynamic producers using only the bare minimum added SO2, the Barrals work hard for their dirt-in-your-glass pedigree. We're not the folks to fall head over heels for overly natural (read: flawed) wines, but this wine sings the praises of all things dirty. 50% Carignan with the balance Grenache and Cinsault, the wine is rugged and gorgeous. A must try for anyone who eats their veggies straight from garden, dirt and all.
