About This Wine
Names like Sloan (Napa Valley) and Le Bon Pasteur (Pomerol), both owned by the Goldin Group, are names that should inspire confidence. Sloan is a benchmark Napa producer whose Proprietary Red goes for well over $500 online and is made by legendary winemaker Martha McClellan (wife of Bob Levy). Le Bon Pasteur is located on the border of Saint-Ãmilion and Pomerol, and produces world class Merlot based blends from this iconic region. In 2017 Goldin found an some old vine plots high in the Eden Valley and founded the Tarrawatta estate to produce dry farmed Shiraz and Grenache. The vineyards were planted in the late 1800s, and the same dedication given to Sloan and Le Bon Pasteur is applied to Tarrawatta. Better yet, instead of paying the incredibly steep price tags for these premium wines, this Shiraz is coming in at a sweet $35.
This particular wine is from the Ambervale vineyard, an area known for outstanding terroir composed of red, rocky soils and has earned its reputation for producing some of the strongest and most structured Shiraz in all of the Barossa. 2018 was also an excellent vintage overall. Yields were on the lower side, but the quality was high as a result of a long, slow growing season. Expect aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola, woodsmoke, and vanilla, that melts into a seamless and expansive palate of cassis, cherry preserve, and licorice flavors supported by vibrant acidity and beautiful tannins. - Meg
