The phrase if you know, you know could not apply more to any other Bordeaux producer than Château Le Puy. This iconic Château has been in continuous operation by the Amoreau family since 1610. Most of its wines are bottled under the FrancsCôtes de Bordeaux & Vin de France. Despite their illustrious history, the very existence of Château Le Puy almost defies belief. In a region that falls especially hard for the oak-and-muscles and point-chasing approaches, Le Puy manages to make some of the most exciting wines in Bordeaux, as well as some of the most exciting wines of the entire natural wine movement.
For the first time in the history of Le Puy, they are simultaneously releasing two new Climats (Single Vineyard plot wines), Le Pin and Les Noyers from their 16-hectare Closerie Saint Roc estate. Interestingly, these vineyards were originally planted with Mourvèdre and Colombard, and then replanted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon early in the 20th century. These two bottlings will be of the first micro-climate wines to be released from the estate. Our colleagues around the wine world have already hailed these wines as standard bearers for a new wave of site-specific wine making on the Right Bank, as well as top contenders for the next generation of cult Bordeaux.
Les Noyers is 80% Merlot and 20% Cab Franc form a 2.9 hectare parcel on a hillside location with a more shallow, sandier soil on a limestone bedrock. This wine is very lifted with earthy, savory, and slightly gamey notes and a combination of dark briary and red berry fruit.
