GREECE€™S ANSWER TO FINE BAROLO: XINOMAVRO
Xinomavro, pronounced ksee-NOH-mah-vroh, may be a new grape to many of you, but it is Greece€™s most serious red wine grape variety. It presents all of the dried red fruits, leather, game, spice, and tar from serious Nebbiolo examples, but with mountainous Greek origin. Naoussa is the region in Macedonia in Northern Greece that is most associated with the variety and tends to release the best examples. The Dalamaras family have been making wine and distilling spirts in Naoussa since 1840. Sixth-generation Kostis Dalamaras took over in 2010. The 6 hectares of vineyard are farmed organically, planted to Xinomavro, and here in the Paliokalias vineyard at about 240-300 m elevation in the foothills of Mount Vermio, the oldest vines are 85 years old. The result is one of Greece€™s best examples of this noble red grape variety. It€™s well structured and mainly red-fruited in youth, with lifted red rose florals and savory aromas of olive, dried tomato, cured meats and tobacco.
