About This Wine
If Assyrtiko is the Greek white grape everyone now knows, Moscofilero is the one worth knowing next. It is a pink-skinned variety grown primarily on the high-altitude plateau of Mantineia in the Peloponnese, where elevations around 800 meters preserve the grape's natural aromatic intensity and acidity. Unlike Assyrtiko's saline, stony character, Moscofilero leans aromatic and floral, with the kind of spice and lift more reminiscent of Gewurztraminer or Muscat than anything from the Aegean. Skouras is the reference-point producer for the variety, and "Salto" is their most serious take on it: a single-clone bottling fermented with wild yeast and given minimal skin contact, which pulls a faint blush from the grape's dark skins without turning it into a rose. The result is a wine with more texture and complexity than the standard version, while keeping the aromatic intensity that makes Moscofilero worth paying attention to.
