2024 Luis Pato "Vinhas Velhas" Bairrada Branco

Perhaps one of the best value white wines on the planet.

Vinhas Velhas means "old vines," and Pato was the first producer in Portugal to put the phrase on a label, so this bottling is where the whole Portuguese old-vine category traces its paperwork. It's a blend of Bairrada's native white trio: Bical for structure and that flinty, smoky drive, Cercial (Bairrada's own, no relation to Madeira's Sercial) for cut and nerve, and Sercialinho, a nearly extinct crossing that Pato has almost single-handedly kept alive, for wild aromatics. The vines grow on a mix of sandy and clay-limestone soils a few miles from the Atlantic, and the wine tastes like it: saline, citrusy, high-tension white that drinks like village Chablis with a sea breeze through it. Fresh 2024 fruit, ready now, and built to surprise you if you lose a few bottles in the cellar for five years. At $25 it is the cheapest possible ticket into one of Europe's great white wine secrets.

93+ Points Wine Advocate: "The 2024 Vinhas Velhas Branco is a wine that has existed since 1990, but now it ferments and matures exclusively in stainless steel. It's a blend of Bical, Sercialinho and Cerceal that fermented with indigenous yeasts and was kept in stainless steel until bottling time. I just love the austere nose with a notable absence of fruit. It's all about crushed rocks, herbs and flowers, and it's balanced, elegant and subtle. It has 12.4% alcohol and 5.1 grams of acidity. It's fresh and light with lots of energy and light. This wine has a long track record for aging in bottle, and this vintage should do so. The price is unbeatable. 40,000 bottles, 400 magnums and 2,000 half-bottles produced. It was bottled during 2025."
